Featured Artist Spotlight: Elaine Russell

Featured Artist Spotlight : Elaine Russell

Our November, 2008 First Friday Artscrawl event marks our first Dia De Los Muertos celebration. For this event, we have three featured artists: Elaine Russell (one of our co-owners), Vanessa Brown, and Sue Orchant. Read on to learn more about our highlighted artists–Elaine Russell!

Elaine Russell is mixed media artist and photographer who began taking photos when she was elected as the family photographer at the age of six. She received a degree in photography from the New York Institute and has shot professionally for weddings, portraits, advertising, pet studies, and magazines. In addition to photography, Elaine has become increasingly enamored with mixed media art and jewelry making. Her prayer beads have been sold worldwide for that past 15 years.

Elaine’s thought on Dia del Los Muertos:

“The Dia de Las Muertos festivals in Mexico, and in Mexican communities around the world, bespeak of the respect we have for those who have passed. Death is not to be viewed with fear, but with gratefulness and honor of a life well lived. To me — it is a joyous, colorful, reverent celebration.”

Grand Opening a SMASHING SUCCESS!

Many thanks to all who attended our October 17th Grand Opening Celebration!

We were JAMMED all night–in fact, people were lined up and cramming the gallery well before opening even started. It ran almost two hours longer than planned and everyone that dropped by had a great time.

Latest Happenings at the Gallery

We’ve been open for business for a couple of weeks now and we’ve gotten great feedback from fellow artists and local shoppers. Most call our approach “daring” and “exciting” and have been happy to see the results of our well-laid plans.

This photos shows the gateway from our main featured hallway, leading into our larger gallery space (with 20-foot ceilings). Work on display in this image includes pieces by Caitlin Padilla, Christian Gallegos, Jeannette Lyle, Rich Ragle, and Raine Klover (including a variety of artists in our little card rack).

We’re revving up for our Grand Opening Celebration (Oct. 17th, 5 – 8 pm) and we’re now proud members of the Albuquerque Artscrawl and Albuquerque Arts Business Alliance. They have been wonderful to us and very supportive of our vision and cause. Thanks, guys!

We have many classes going on now as well. Pop into our blog now and then to see some of the featured classes, or drop by the gallery and paw through our HUGE class book (really, really huge!).

We’re Almost Open!

We’re almost open!

As many of you know, we’re planning to open for business a little before our official Grand Opening Celebration.

That means we’ll be open for business in just a few days! The Cows have been busy hanging art, putting the finishing touches on our twin classrooms, and working to make our new gallery tip-top for all of you art lovers out there.

Stay tuned for an official “soft opening” date. You can drop by any time and see our cool window display (hanging art–floating!).

Our official Grand Opening Celebration is slotted for third Friday, October 17th, 2008, from 5 – 8 pm. Our gallery showcases work by over 50 artists and craftspeople.

Stay Tuned for our Opening!

The Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space owners have been working hard over the last few weeks. We’ve been painting, prepping, building, embellishing and otherwise making our new arty space snazzy for all of you art lovers out there.

When we weren’t busy adding Cranberry Fizz and Light Gray to our slick new walls, we were moving in furniture, cleaning, fine-tuning, and creating a fresh new face.

On our last day of painting, one of our co-owners Christian Gallegos, took paint roller to the primed wall and generated a Chagall-meets-Picasso mermaid on the fly. It’s such a shame we had to paint over her!

We will be opening for business sometime during early September (our soft opening). We currently have over 55 artists and craftspeople signed up to showcase work in our new gallery.

Our grand opening celebration is set for October 17th, 2008, from 5 – 8 pm.

We can’t wait for everyone to come in and say hello!
